Kapil Sibal: Govt to auction 4G spectrum by year end

BARCELONA: India is looking at holding spectrum auctions for the fourth generation (4G) mobile services by the end

of this year, besides finalising plans to sell off radio waves for the 2G services, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal

has said.

"By the end of the year, we are actually going to auction 4G (spectrum). That is what our intent is. We have enough

spectrum now to share with everybody," he said at the India Day function organised by his ministry at the Mobile

World Congress here.

Sibal said the government will have enough radio waves for all operators after it is released from the defence

services as well as the cancellation of 122 2G new licences by the Supreme Court in the 2G spectrum allocation

case.

Sibal added, however, that the government does not want to put all the spectrum for auction at one go but the final

decision will depend a lot on the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).

Microsoft unveils Windows 8 for public test

SEATTLE: Microsoft Corp unveils the first widely available test version of Windows 8 on Wednesday, giving the public the first chance to try out the slick, new-look operating system it hopes will restore the company's fading tech supremacy.

Windows 8, as the first Microsoft operating system compatible with low-power microprocessors designed by ARM Holdings Plc, will run on tablets as well as desktops and laptops.

"The operating system has begun to be seen as largely irrelevant," said Sid Parakh, an analyst at fund firm McAdams Wright Ragen, which holds Microsoft shares. "This is the release that will have to prove its relevance all over again."

Tablets and smartphones and cloud computing have made Bill Gates' vision of "a computer on every desk and in every home" seem quaint, and Apple Inc and Google Inc and Amazon.com now set the agenda for the computing industry.

Still, all of those companies' fancy new hardware devices need basic operating software, and Microsoft is betting there is still more than a little room for Windows.

"The big increment here is that it'll be viable on the ARM platform, that there'll be a tablet form factor - that kind of makes it a big deal," said Dan Hanson, a portfolio manager at BlackRock, which holds 5 per cent of Microsoft's shares through various funds. "Microsoft correctly identified the relevance of the tablet form factor over a decade ago. This operating system may allow them to finally execute."

The Product

Windows 8 will come in two main flavors - one that works on the traditional x86 chips made by Intel Corp for desktops and laptops, and a new version for the ARM microprocessors that have become the standard for tablets, smartphones and other portable devices.

Microsoft says it is aiming to get machines running on both the ARM and Intel platforms into the market at the same time but has not set a target date.

In both versions, Windows 8 features a completely new interface, borrowed from what Microsoft calls the "Metro" style of the current Windows Phone software. It features blocks or 'tiles' that can be moved around the screen or tapped to go straight into an application.

MWC: Samsung shows off Beam projector smartphone and 10.1in Note tablet

‘KOREAN HARDWARE GIANT Samsung has launched several smartphones and tablets at Mobile World Congress (MWC) to

confirm its position as the number one Android device maker.

With competition from HTC and Huawei at the show, Samsung first announced the Galaxy Beam, a 4in smartphone with a

built-in 15 lumen LED projector, to let users display videos, images and text, which it claims can be visible up to

50in in size.

The device will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread rather than Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, is powered by a dual-core

1GHz processor, and features a 5MP camera.

Secondly, the firm unveiled a 10.1in version of its Galaxy Note device, following on from the 5in model it unveiled

last year that it said was a cross between a smartphone and a tablet.

The new Galaxy Note has many features similar to the 5in model, including a digital pen, and is powered by a 1.4GHz

dual-core processor running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

It features 1280x800 screen resolution and has 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of internal storage. The device has two cameras -

a rear-facing 3MP camera and a front-facing 2MP camera. It weighs 583g.

Samsung's UK head of telecoms, Simon Stanford said the larger size will help users get more use out of the digital

pen stylus.

"The Galaxy Note 10.1 takes productivity on a Note to a whole new level. With a larger screen and superior

performance, it combines the intuitiveness of handwriting with all the versatility of digital content to let users

be more productive," he said.

"The Galaxy Note 10.1 demonstrates Samsung's commitment to extending the mobile category."

Lastly, the firm announced two new tablet device in its Galaxy Tab range, the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and the Galaxy Tab 2

10.1.

Both devices are powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor and run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, feature HSPA+

network capabilities for web browsing speeds of up to 21Mbit/s and have rear-facing 3MP cameras.

Google doodle celebrates leap year

Google's latest doodle celebrates the leap year and Italian composer Gioachino Antonio Rossini's 220th birthday.

The doodle showcases four frogs, each closely associated to one of Rossini's best-known comic-opera "The Barber of

Seville'.

In the doodle, while one of the frogs seems to be playing piano, another one looks like a leaping soprano. The

third frog is the barber, Figaro, and the frog getting a shave is Almaviva. Interestingly, frogs, from a very long

time, are associated with 'leap year'. Born on February 29, 1792, in Itlay, Rossini wrote 39 operas as well as

sacred music, chamber music, songs and several instrumental and piano pieces.

Nicknamed "The Italian Mozart," he joined Bologna's Philharmonic School (now GB Martini State Conservatory of

Music) when he was just 14.

There he composed his first opera seria - Demetrio e Polibio. During his teens, he learnt violin, horn, and

harpsichord and often sung in public to earn money. Between 1815 and 1823 Rossini produced as many as 20 operas.

Google doodles are the decorative changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries,

and the lives of famous artists and scientists. The first doodle was created by Larry Page and Sergy Brin in the

year 1998 to mark the celebrations of the Burning Man Festival.

Google currently has over 1000 doodles. Google recently revamped its doodle site, which features largely all

doodles created by the company. The website also gives a peek into the creative process that goes into creating

these doodles.

I Will Move The Rock

Once upon a time…there was a man who was sleeping at night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light and the Savior appeared. The Lord told the man He had work for him to do, and showed him a large rock in front of his cabin.

The Lord explained that the man was to push against the rock with all his might.

This the man did, day after day. For many years he toiled from sun up to sun down, his shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock, pushing with all his might.

Each night the man returned to his cabin sore, and worn out, feeling that his whole day had been spent in vain.

Seeing that the man was showing signs of discouragement, Satan decided to enter the picture placing thoughts into the man’s mind such as : “You have been pushing against that rock for a long time, and it hasn’t budged.W
hy kill yourself over this? You are never going to move it.” Thus giving the man the impression that the task was impossible and that he was a failure.

These thoughts discouraged and disheartened the man even more. “Why kill myself over this?” he thought. “I’ll just put in my time, giving just the minimum of effort and that will be good enough.”

And that he planned to do until one day he decided to make it a matter of prayer and take his troubled thoughts to the Lord.
“Lord”, he said, “I have labored long and hard in your service, putting all my strength to do that which you have asked.

Yet, after all this time, I have not even budged that rock a half a millimeter. What is wrong? Why am I failing?”

To this the Lord responded compassionately, “My friend, when long ago I asked you to serve me and you accepted, I told you that your task was to push against the rock with all your strength, which you have done.
Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it.

Your task was to push. And now you come to me, your strength spent, thinking that you have failed. But, is that really so? Look at yourself.

Your arms are strong and muscled, your back sinewed, and brown, your hands are callused from constant pressure, and your legs have become massive and hard. Through opposition you have grown much and your abilities now surpass that which you used to have.

Yet you haven’t moved the rock. But your calling was to be obedient and to push and to exercise your faith and trust in My wisdom. This you have done. I, my friend, will now move the rock.”

A person can make you

A person can make you feel high,
A person can make you feel low.
But only you can decide,
Which way you want to go.
A person can hurt you mentally,
A person can hurt you physically.
But only you can place,
A limit on your abilities.
A person can cause drama,
A person can cause a situation.
But only you can create,
Your own reputation.
A person can make you laugh,
A person can make you cry.
But only you can make,
Decisions for your life.
I guess what I'm trying to say,
That when you're living day to day.
Don't live by what people do,
But live by what you know is true.

Aries March 21 to April 19
A conversation with a colleague or someone who works for you about a recent assignment might become frustrating and emotionally wrought. You may see that there needs to be some type of revision in this project, and you may have clever ideas about how to proceed. The trouble, however, could be that someone you work with could resent having to do the extra work. It may cause tension..

Taurus April 20 to May 20
You might be overly sensitive as you try to make gains in a creative project, only to realize that you need to do more work to ensure its success. Instead of worrying that you are not talented enough to contribute, it would be a far better use of your energy to focus on making the gifts you do have more efficient. Taking any criticism or feedback personally today could hurt your craft. A thicker skin may be in order.

Gemini May 21 to June 20
Emotions could run high early in the day when it comes to a domestic matter that may require your attention. You might feel as if your family is not supportive of your personal goals, and if this is the case, you might be extra-sensitive about it now. You could feel a mounting sense of frustration about finishing a stalled home renovation project. Do your best to keep things in perspective.

Cancer June 21 to July 22

You may need to guard your words early in the day. You might experience a conflict about voicing hidden information. On one hand, you may be tired of keeping a secret and feel it need to be brought out in the open. On the other hand, you might realize that sharing this material could be at the expense of someone dear to you. Think carefully about any potential consequences before you proceed.

Nokia eyes China in smartphone comeback push

BARCELONA: Mobile phone giant Nokia on Monday looked to a launch in China and a cameraphone "revolution" to help it stage a comeback in the fiercely competitive smartphone market after a dismal 2011.

On the opening day of Mobile World Congress, where tens of thousands of executives from the industry have gathered, the phone maker said it would push its flagship Lumia smartphone series, that run on the Windows platform, to the Asian giant.

Announcing that Windows phones have now been made compatible with Chinese mobile operating networks, Jo Harlow, who heads the Finnish group's smart devices division, said: "That means Nokia will bring Lumia to China."

Beyond eyeing the massive Chinese consumer market, the group also unveiled a new phone called 808 Pure View, which boasts a 41 megapixel sensor technology described by Harlow as a "revolution in smartphone imaging."

The phone, featuring Carl Zeiss optics, allows the user to capture an image before zooming in and cropping or resizing to show previously unseen details.

Its 41 megapixels are also far above the 8 or 10 megapixels available on the market today, and even beats many stand-alone digital cameras.

While Nokia mobile handsets were once ubiquitous, the firm has been struggling to secure a foothold in the smartphone market, with Lumia so far failing to reverse falling sales in its overall smartphone business.

In the fourth quarter, Nokia sold just 19.6 million smartphones -- 31 percent fewer than in the same quarter of 2010 and far behind market-leader Apple, which reported 37 million units sold, and runner-up Samsung, which announced 36.5 million smartphone sales in the quarter.

The group also posted a net loss of 1.2 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in 2011, compared to a net profit of 1.8 billion euros a year earlier.

Asked if the Barcelona offers would improve the group's results, Nokia chairman and chief executive Stephen Elop said: "The most important thing is that we have demonstrated the action necessary to improve the fortunes of Nokia."

The group is "changing the strategy and executing" the shift.

"With great products and consumers alike, the rest will fall into place," he added.

It appeared to have convinced analysts.

Francisco Jeronimo, IDC research manager, told AFP: "After Nokia's launch, yesterday's launches by HTC, Huawei and Sony all seem outdated."

Asian giants HTC and Huawei on Sunday launched ultrarapid smartphones boasting quad core processors that give them twice the processing speeds as those currently on the market.

But Jeronimo noted that a good camera was a better selling point than speed.

"Nokia was right not to go for a quad core. Why do you need quad core? It's like getting a Ferrari.

"When you go into a shop and you see a phone with 41 megapixels, compared to another one which is fast but which only offers 8 megapixels, you're most likely to pick the one with more pixels," he noted.

In addition, the group's push into China also opens the doors to millions of consumers, he said.

Even though Chinese brands Huawei and ZTE are traditionally strong in their home market, "Nokia is a strong brand" and the price of one of the two new Lumia phones, the 610 is a competitive 189 euros before subsidies and taxes.

"That makes it the cheapest Windows smartphone on the market," Jeronimo noted.

" INSPIRING STORY "

A giant ship engine failed. The ship’s owners tried one expert after another, but none of them could figure but how to fix the engine.

Then they brought in an old man who had been fixing ships since he was a young. He carried a large bag of tools with him, and when he arrived, he immediately went to work.

He inspected the engine very carefully, top to bottom.

Two of the ship’s owners were there, watching this man, hoping he would know what to do.

After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something.

Instantly, the engine lurched into life. He carefully put his hammer away. The engine was fixed!

A week later, the owners received a bill from the old man for ten thousand dollars.

“What?!” the owners exclaimed. “He hardly did anything!”

So they wrote the old man a note saying, “Please send us an itemized bill.”

The man sent a bill that read:
Tapping with a hammer…… …….. ……… $ 2.00
Knowing where to tap……… …….. …….. $ 9, 998.00

Effort is important, but knowing where to make an effort makes all the difference!

Mobile mantra grips student community

Today having a mobile is not criteria but having newer versions or changing them frequently, trying to be on par

with technology, seems to be the order of the day with college students, says VIKRAM MUKKA

The utility of mobile phone as a device which facilitates your communication, either by helping you to talk or text

from your phone, is passé. Times have changed so is the mindset of the youngsters. Today having a mobile is not

criteria but having newer versions or changing them frequently (trying to be on par with technology) seems to be

the order of the day. One finds relatively increasing number of students who are frequently changing their mobiles

in the city colleges today.

iPad trademark: Chinese co's most valuable asset?

Yang Long-san, Apple's nemesis in a battle over the iPad trademark in China, once strutted the expo halls with

dreams of market dominance. His company, Proview, may now be in ruins and his most valuable asset a disputed

trademark, but those dreams remain intact.

"My biggest wish is to resolve all these frustrating problems and put them behind me," Yang said in a recent

telephone interview. "If we can resolve all the problems we have now and I have a chance to make a comeback, I'd

still want to overtake my old competitors."

Much of that will depend on whether he wins a long-running dispute over ownership of the trademark in China -

Apple's second-biggest market by revenue. Although a recent decision by the Shanghai district court to reject

Proview's demands that Apple stop selling the iPad was a setback for Proview, the case is still to be heard in the

higher court in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong Wednesday.

A decision against Apple there would set a precedent that would create an uphill battle in other cases in lower

courts around China. Local media have said Proview is seeking up to 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) in compensation.
