Mercedes plans model offensive until 2015

Three-five compact cars bearing the three-pointed star will go on sale in India by that date.

Mercedes-Benz India is the last of the three German luxury brands to enter the compact segment in India, but when it makes its presence felt, it will do so in a big way: it is planning the launch of three to five compact models in India. It will invest Rs 350 crore in its factory at Chakan to this end.

Part of the expansion will also include a couple of the current range: the ML and GL SUVs are on track to be assembled here, which should bring their price down considerably thanks to them giving up their CBU status.

Mercedes will probably bring almost its entire range to the Indian marketplace, with everything from the A- and B- Class hatchbacks to the GLK and upcoming crossover being the ones bringing in the numbers as the X1 did for BMW and the A3 is expected to do the same for Audi.

Whatever the case be, the future promises a raft of stylish, luxurious yet affordable premium cars for the Indian consumer. Time to start saving up!
