Twitter buys Posterous, a social blogging service

Twitter said Monday that it has acquired Posterous, a fellow San Francisco startup that shares its roots as a microblogging service that evolved into something different.

"Today we are welcoming a very talented group from Posterous to Twitter," the company said on its blog. "This team has built an innovative product that makes sharing across the web and mobile devices simple - a goal we share."

Founded in 2008, Posterous was an early competitor to Tumblr in an effort to become a faster, easier way to share content online. But where Tumblr's popularity exploded, Posterous' growth was more modest.

In 2010 the company decided to go after online groups; in September; it pivoted to private sharing. Most recently, the company announced that it has 15 million monthly users.

Terms of the sale to Twitter were not disclosed.

IPad pre-orders: Apple fans who wanted to preorder a new iPad in hopes of getting it on Friday might opt to line up at a retail store instead.

Apple said over the weekend that preorders for its new tablet have sold out, which means any preorders placed more recently won't ship until Monday or maybe later.

The new iPad will hit stores Friday, and customers who preordered right after the product's debut last Wednesday will get theirs that day.
